Riyadh Municipality is intensifying its efforts to enhance the urban landscape of the capital through a project aimed at removing concrete barriers. This initiative covers areas surrounding facilities as well as residential neighborhoods within the urban boundaries. During the first and second phases of the project, a large number of concrete barriers were removed from approximately 5,000 sites. In the first phase, 39 sites around government and administrative buildings were addressed, while the second phase focused on implementing a comprehensive plan to identify and gradually remove barriers based on carefully studied priorities.
The project is one of several initiatives launched by the Municipality to improve the urban environment. It aims to enhance the city’s aesthetics by removing obsolete concrete barriers that have lost their functional purpose and now serve as visual obstructions, hindering the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. These barriers have also disconnected neighborhoods from vital facilities, affecting the smooth flow of movement and the quality of the urban scene in the capital. The initiative seeks to optimize the use of public spaces and improve mobility in key areas, directly enhancing the experience of both residents and visitors and contributing to the concept of an integrated urban environment.
As part of the project, the Municipality is working to integrate traffic, organizational, and architectural aspects to keep pace with population growth and meet the increasing needs of residents. This involves urban planning that ensures smooth movement and easy access while reducing the physical barriers that limit effective use of public spaces.
This approach reflects Riyadh Municipality's commitment to developing a sustainable urban environment that improves quality of life. It aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by providing urban solutions that enhance the city's visual appeal and achieve balanced development in harmony with the city’s identity and the aspirations of its residents.
