The General Authority for Roads, in cooperation with the Riyadh Municipality, has announced the use of demolition waste in asphalt mixtures applied to the surface of roads in various neighborhoods of Riyadh. This initiative aims to enhance environmental sustainability and optimize the use of available resources, in line with the strategic objectives of the road sector, which emphasizes fostering innovation.

In its statement, the Authority explained that the initiative seeks to promote environmental sustainability and develop more efficient infrastructure in response to environmental challenges. It also highlighted that managing construction and demolition waste is a core part of the Kingdom’s shift toward a circular economy, with a national target of recycling 60% of such waste by the year 2035.

The Authority clarified that a research study conducted by its Road Research Center evaluated asphalt and aggregate layers containing crushed materials sourced from demolished buildings and old concrete. These materials were supplied by the Riyadh Municipality’s environmental landfill site, with the aim of expanding the use of this type of sustainable pavement.

The General Authority for Roads affirmed that the implementation of this initiative embodies the Kingdom’s vision of turning environmental challenges into innovative opportunities. This approach also helps reduce the environmental impact of accumulating waste and decreases the reliance on virgin materials, thereby lowering the costs of road construction and maintenance while promoting environmental sustainability. It moves the road sector closer to becoming more sustainable and eco-friendly.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to expanding the implementation of this initiative, which has recently been carried out in partnership with the municipalities of Jeddah and Al-Ahsa. This effort aligns with the strategic objectives of the road sector to achieve sixth place globally in the Road Quality Index by 2030, reduce road fatalities to fewer than 5 per 100,000 people, cover the road network with safety measures in line with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), and maintain high service levels that meet the network’s capacity demands.
