Riyadh Municipality launched an online voting platform to name 29 parks across the city, reinforcing its community role by involving residents in decision-making. This initiative aims to meet residents’ needs and highlights the importance of community participation in urban planning and development—key goals within the Municipality’s strategy to grow its work, evolve, and build a distinctive urban environment.

The community participation initiative follows a linguistic framework aligned with the Municipality’s language policy for naming. The names connect with Riyadh’s urban heritage and are categorized based on geographic areas: North, East, Central, West, and South Riyadh, as well as distinctive parks. Each category reflects meaningful themes:

• North Riyadh: medical terms

• East Riyadh: plants, birds, and living creatures

• Central Riyadh and distinctive parks: prominent figures, historical sites, Islamic landmarks

• West Riyadh: Saudi cities, villages, mountains, and valleys

• South Riyadh: minerals and cosmic creatures

These categories and criteria help create a clear mental map of Riyadh’s directions and facilitate location identification. They also add educational value by promoting the use and awareness of these names within the community. This effort supports the Municipality’s role in fostering community awareness about Riyadh’s civilization and diversity.
